“This year, the Clarkstown Democratic Committee took on a tremendous challenge. Running four first time candidates, with little name recognition, against four incumbents who have held office for years.

“While we await the count of absentee ballots to determine if Councilman Mark Licker will keep his seat, we recognize that the three other Council seats and the Supervisor’s race went to the incumbents.

“Though many will view this as a loss, I want to express my sincere pride in what we achieved together. We heard stories of individuals crossing party lines to support our candidates. We saw more people cast their ballots for this year’s Democratic candidates than in previous local elections. And we have built a team of candidates that truly appreciate and admire one another for our differences and shared ambitions. That is meaningful progress.

“This year was not just about winning a race. It was about lifting up our community, encouraging residents to use their voices, reminding everyone that democracy only thrives when people participate. And that Clarkstown does not have to settle for the same old, same old that is not working.

“For too long, low turnout has allowed the current administration to continue driving our town deeper into debt and dysfunction. But I believe that with the slate of candidates I proudly ran alongside, residents saw that our town can be so much more than it is.

“While it was not the final result we had hoped for, last night, Clarkstown Democrats took a step forward. Our goals remain and while we may not be in office, our work is far from over. We will continue to show up, to engage, to build bridges and push for progress. We are more determined than ever to keep moving forward.

“I am deeply grateful to the Clarkstown Democratic Committee team; the executive committee and all volunteers who made phone calls, knocked doors, hosted meet and greets, and reminded their friends to vote; and I thank my running mates – Eugene Bondar, Mark Licker, Dan Maher, and Gina DeFelice for their commitment to our community and making Clarkstown a better place.

“Most importantly, thank you to everyone who volunteered to work the polls and to every voter who went out and cast their ballot.

“This isn’t the end — it’s the next chapter.”

Greg Sheehan,

Chair of the Clarkstown Democratic Committee
